Coal mining begins at Maules Creek site after months of protests

Whitehaven says that mine remains on budget and will ship first coal in March, despite disruption by pickets and hoax

After months of protests, Whitehaven has officially begun open-cut mining at its flagship Maules Creek site in northern NSW.

Two blasts last week preceded todays start of full-scale mining using Whitehavens new mining fleet being operated by Whitehaven employees, the company said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange on Wednesday.
